I began this piece in the Asheville River Arts District while taking a workshop a couple years ago. Then came Hurricane Helene. I finished it while thinking of and praying for the many devastated by the California wildfires during 2024. Unimaginable devastation of lives in both places. Some, sadly, may never recover. Sometimes there are only ashes and rubble left to sit in when tragedy strikes as a fire or flood. During those times I have found it helpful to consider not only what is lost, but also what remains. What has survived the onslaught? What is bigger than the unfathomable? Eventually, hopefully, we will rise and learn to live again. “The stars remain” and the greatest Love.
12x12 oil and cold wax on cradled panel.
